The C1 Professional Training Center was founded in 1987 as Cummins Professional Training Center, a subsidiary of the Cummins Engine Co. Cummins is the world’s leading producer of heavy-duty diesel truck engines. Back then; Cummins executives recognized a problem facing many of their engine customers in the trucking industry - a severe driver shortage. Cummins appointed Chris Welch to develop a training program that would provide well trained, safety conscience, professional truck drivers.
The school was located in Indianapolis because the city is a vital hub to the national highway transportation system. After several years of growth, Cummins spun off the training center and C1 became an independently run company in 1991. Today, C1 successfully graduates over 1,500 new drivers for the Driver Solutions network annually.
